Collection of decorations

The collection contains over 5,800 objects of domestic and foreign origin. The most significant are the domestic awards that were awarded from the middle of the 19th to the end of the 20th century. Before the restoration of Serbian statehood, meritorious persons were awarded only with foreign awards. The renewed Serbian state is introducing its own decorations based on the modern European way of rewarding.

The collection contains the decorations of the Principality and Kingdom of Serbia, which were mostly included in the joint State of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The fund includes this very valuable national heritage. The change in the state structure in Yugoslavia after World War II led to the introduction of awards with new ideological symbolism. Such decorations were awarded until the collapse of socialist Yugoslavia. These awards have increased our collection. The state alliance that included the rest of Yugoslavia had its own decorations. Part of them was taken over from the previous system of socialist awards with new state symbols introduced, and with the newly established awards, an attempt was made to return to historical values and traditional spirit.Decorations were awarded while the federal state lasted. Now they are part of the museum collection. The events of the last decade of the 20th century led to the creation of the Republic of Srpska, which based its awards on Serbian historical heritage. The set of these decorations enriched the museum's collection.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Serbian state developed its awards into a system of rewarding and recognizing certain merits in all fields of activity. The decorations show the dynastic changes that took place on the Serbian throne at that time. Orders, medals and memorials make up this system of decorations that are awarded for military and general merit. The decorations established in this way continued to develop until the Second World War, after which state changes followed, which can also be seen in the decorations. At that time, awards were established with state symbols that expressed the ruling ideology. It was a break with national heritage and tradition on these important symbols of state sovereignty. At the end of the twentieth century, a system of decorations was established that was a combination of decorations with ideological symbolism and decorations with symbols based on heritage and tradition. This was short lived.

Among the decorations with which the state awarded its deserving individuals, there are also decorations of very important historical figures. First of all, these are the remaining decorations from the rich legacy of King Aleksandar I Karađorđević, King Aleksandar I Obrenović. Then Duke Živojin Mišić, Stepa Stepanović, Radomir Putnik and other high-ranking officers and great heroes from the liberation wars of the Serbian people.
